Best Oat Hemp Milk
When it comes to plant-based milks, the convenience of store-bought is appealing—but nothing comes anywhere close to the quality and taste of freshly made.
This is our current milk of choice when whipping up a cold version of an ALKAME CO tonic. Just add a scoop of our powder and froth, stir or shake away!
We love this creamy, delicious milk for many reasons (including taste!), but here are our top three:
1. It’s fast and easy to make. No pre-soaking required like other nut milks.
2. It’s nutritionally power packed! The oats provide soluble fiber (yes, this comes through in the milk!) and the hemp seeds provide healthy fats, protein, high levels of magnesium and other important vitamins and minerals.
3. Oats and hemp seeds are crops that can grow in virtually every region of the US—making it possible to source them in more sustainable, local ways. They are also more environmentally sustainable crops to grow than most nuts.
Best Oat Hemp Milk
3/4 cup rolled oats
1/4 cup hemp seeds
4 cups water
pinch of salt
2 tsp honey or maple (optional)
1 tsp vanilla extract (optional)
1. Add all ingredients to a blender. Blend on high for 30-45 seconds (*see important tip below).
2. Strain using mesh sieve.
3. Strain again using t shirt material (find an old, clean shirt and make it your dedicated straining cloth!). Fist wet the t shirt material, then lay it over your sieve. Pour the milk in and let it start straining in its own. Then gather up the edges of the t shirt sieve and slowly squeeze out the rest of the milk.
4. Enjoy and/or store in a jar in the fridge for up to 5 days.
One way to get in the quick and easy healthy habit of taking your ALKAME CO powders is to make a quick shake on your way out the door for work or whatever the day holds. Enjoy it as a morning or afternoon snack/pick me up. Add a scoop of Sunshine Golden Milk or Mushroom Chocolate to an 8 oz jar, top with Oat Hemp Milk, add a touch of natural sweetener if desired, give it a shake and you’re ready to rock!
TIP: Oat milk can become a little gloopy due to it’s nutritious dietary starch content, so here are a few important pointers to avoid that:
Be sure not to over blend (about 30 seconds in a high powered blender, 45 seconds on high in a normal blender). Strain the milk very well (strain first with a mesh seive and then using t shirt material). Avoid heating because it will thicken and gloop up (though when frothed well it does produce a thick, creamy consistency which you might actually be into for, say, a hot Mushroom Chocolate).
